Memphis Tigers raise $7.2 million in donations
University of Memphis athletic director RC Johnson said he did not know if the economy does not allow it, but Wednesday, he was able to report encouraging fundraising news. For the third straight year, donations to Tiger Scholarship Fund exceeded 7 million.
Johnson said nearly $ 7.2 million was raised, a little shy of the record of last year, $ 7.3 million haul.
''I must be honest,''Johnson said. ''There was a time when I do not think we would get (more than $ 7 million).I must thank the Tiger Nation because they are really tough economic times, and I must thank Alan Graf (Chairman of Tiger Athletics Advisory Council). To raise $ 7 million is a heck of an accomplishment.''
Only six years ago that the UdeM exceeded $ 5 million in donated radio for the first time. In 2009, the mark of $ 7 million has been eclipsed.
Johnson said when he arrived 16 years ago, surpassing $ 1 million in annual giving was the goal.
''We desperately wanted to go more than 7 million euros for the third consecutive year and we did.We fell short only about $ 100,000 corresponding to the total last year of $ 7.3 million. I was hoping at least a dollar more than we introduced last year.''
Johnson, who expects the athletic department to operate with a budget of $ 38 million this fiscal year, said he could have extended the collection of donations from TSF to Friday, but do not want to take in relation to the total of next year. He said he has not set a target of raising funds for next year.
''As I talked to other schools in their fundraising, most are impressed that we were able to spend more than 7 million,''Johnson said.''I know it was the hardest since I was here, but I feel the future is optimistic. We just go to work harder, and who understands me.''
Memphis enters the 2011-12 athletic year with enthusiasm in many of his athletes. The men's basketball team is coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance and the women's team played in the playoff events back to back. The softball team won its first NCAA Tournament invitation and the baseball team had a 30 win season, pace by Chad Zurcher, C-USA Player of the Year, Male Athlete of the Year conference hitter and leader of the nation.The U of M enters his second season with former Tiger running back Larry Porter as head football coach and embarked on a campaign of $ 10 million in capital for the game which includes an installation of 8 million dollar indoor practice.
