Some 320 soldiers and civilians died and 390 were injured. Two-thirds of the men who died were African American sailors, and according to the website of the U.S. Department of the Navy Naval Historical Center, the Port Chicago disaster represented 15 percent of all African-American victims of World War II .

"We will honor those who have passed, and the resistance of African American soldiers who are certainly part of the civil rights movement and desegregation of the military," said David Dunham, director of ROHO of the First World War Project II Homefront.
