Old dehumidifier sets home alight
It was a week in Auckland to wet sand Martin released his dehumidifier and it lit before he left for work.
During the day the unit, which was over 10 years, but still very up in overheating. He has lit the room as it melted.
Martin's clothes, furniture and irreplaceable memories were destroyed - including home movies and baby clothes. All that survived was left covered with thick grease.
"The room was totally black," the mother of two said. "There were paintings of smoke hanging from the ceiling, where the nylon and plastic had melted."
Firefighters said the house in a quiet cul-de-Pakuranga bag, was saved only because his bedroom door and windows were closed. The fire itself off after sucking the oxygen in the room dry.
Martin said: "I could lose my whole house."
In the absence of smoke detectors in the area of the house, the alarm was not raised until his twenty-year-old son, Aaron, came home from work.
The family dog, Pippa, was in and Martin was afraid it would have been caught in the flames, if it had spread.
"Aaron has found the house full of smoke. Pippa ran like crazy.I received a phone message from one who said, "Mom you better go home, the house is on fire."
"He turned on the electricity off and called the fire department. To return to the house to the fire department is here ... Everything was a mess. My heart was in my throat. "
Martin was grateful no one was injured and said it was an awakening that smoke alarms should be installed in each room.
