South Korea Expresses Interest in Maui Sister City Relationship

South Korean officials say they are interested in establishing a twinning relationship with the County of Maui.
Mayor Alan Arakawa and Chairman Danny Mateo received the news, while meeting with the mayor of Seo-gu earlier this week. The two were part of a delegation that went to Maui in South Korea on July 5 to formally extend the invitation sister-city.
The trip comes just in time for a dialogue with the Korean officials before traveling to Hawaii in the fall to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation.It also comes on the heels of news that Korea will host the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.
Seo-gu Yong Hwan Park Mayor and his team were on hand to welcome the mayor and president Arakawa Mateo with his wife Ann Mayor Arakawa, Deputy Chief Financial Officer Jeremiah Savage and his wife Amber, Special Assistant Kit Zulueta and singer Kim Kapsoo.
"The reality is that we must think of Maui County as part of this global community," said Mayor Arakawa. "The exchange of information and the possibilities are endless when it comes to collaboration between different cities."
Seo-gu has four universities that specialize in many areas of interest in Maui County, including tourism, Hotel and Convention Management, Nursing and Public Administration. The group also visited Maui in Daejeon National Science Museum, where different technologies in the fields of biosciences, telecommunications and Geosciences have been exposed.
"Their technology is far ahead of Maui," said the president of Mateo. "This relationship will benefit both parties."
The group also had the opportunity to experience the view from the VIP section of the stadium to seat 40,000 when Daejeon Korea-Japan 2002 FIFA World Cup took place.
On Friday the group of Maui was scheduled to meet the mayor of Goyang. Meetings are also planned in Korea with wholesalers that distribute products of Maui.
