"2001: A Space Odyssey" astronaut lands back in Cleveland
It was just a child when her family left Cleveland for Greenwich Village, but the actor Keir Dullea has distinct memories of his native city and looks forward to visiting this weekend. Dullea will be available to audiences when the Cleveland Cinematheque screens some of his films including "2001: A Space Odyssey," the blockbuster of Stanley Kubrick who flamed Dullea to fame in the 1960s.He is originally from Cleveland, but for movie fans he will always be in space. Dullea is nearly as slim, tall, and boyishly-handsome at 75 as he was at 32, when he played Commander David Bowman in what “Star Wars” creator George Lucas calls “the ultimate science - fiction movie”.
Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” launched Dullea into the stratosphere, and other sci-fi films and TV followed. But critical success came in juicy dramatic roles, often tormented or demented characters as in two films to be shown this weekend at the Cinematheque: 1962’s “David and Lisa,” the story of two schizophrenic teenage lovers, and Otto Preminger’s 1965 psychological thriller, “Bunny Lake is Missing.”
Today, Dullea has returned to his first love, the theater. He got good reviews last season off-Broadway in “I Never Sang for my Father,” and says he loves working with his Tony-nominated wife, Mia Dillon.
HAL’s foil
But his most significant co-star will always be HAL, the creepy supercomputer who refused to open the pod-bay door and left Dullea lost in space.
With effects that were special, especially in the pre-digital age, “2001” captured the public’s imagination.
